Competition 1 is LIVE - 31st March to 30th June
Is Big Air League UK a business?
Nope, Big Air League UK is a non-profit run by a bunch of passionate kitesurfers who just can't get enough of the sport. They're all about spreading the love for kitesurfing and sharing the stoke with everyone.
Why only UK based riders?
It’s a question of scale. The pool of registered riders needs to be big enough to ensure healthy competition, but not so big that there are thousands of riders competing in every league category. We think the UK offers just the right balance - and the volunteers behind the league are based in the UK, so we can compete :) Who knows, Big Air League may evolve in future and we may run regional leagues internationally. But for now it’s UK only.
Are there men's and women's leagues?
Nope, there's no separate men's and women's league! Everyone's on equal footing here. It's all about personal progression and jump height is jump height, no matter who you are. The league structure ensures there's no advantage or disadvantage based on gender, so it's a level playing field where everyone competes equally.
Are there prizes?
No, Big Air League UK does not offer prizes. This competition is all about friendly and healthy competition in the name of individual progression. Winners of each league and Top Riders will be announced at the end of each 3-month competition period to recognize their achievements and celebrate their success.
Do my sessions need to be in the UK?
Nope, all your sessions logged by Woo or Surfr will count; in the UK or international.
Do I need to use hashtags?
Nope, once you’re registered we’ll find your sessions.
Why Surfr and Woo together?
They are the two big players in the kitesurfing jump height arena and we want all riders to be able to progress through big air leagues no matter which platform they choose to use. If another big player emerges, we’ll add it too. Everyone is welcome here.
Is it fair to compare Surfr and Woo users in the same leagues?
Remember it’s all about personal progression, with some healthy competition to motivate you to improve. Of course, there are ways to improve your scores on both platforms, but what really matters is how you are progressing. If you’re skilful enough to “woost” or “cloud fist” then we say go for it!
What about WOO vs. Surfr accuracy?
We do not enter into the debate about which device is more accurate. Both WOO and Surfr are treated equally, and the results returned by their respective databases are considered final. Big Air League UK has no control over, nor the ability to challenge or edit, the results provided by these platforms.
How does the league combine WOO and Surfr data?
We query the global public databases for both Woo and Surfr regularly, just like anyone can in their internet browser, collating the results into one unified system. These results are then segmented based on the users who are registered for the competition. This process ensures that all participants, regardless of which device they use, can compete on an equal footing.
Is the competition only for twin-tip riders, or can other disciplines enter?
At the moment, all disciplines are treated equally. There is currently no segmentation of disciplines within the league. While this may change in the future as the competition evolves, all riders—regardless of discipline—are welcome to participate for now.
Can I change my league mid-competition?
No, your league placement is fixed for the duration of the current competition period, based on your maximum jump height at the start. However, if you achieve a jump height that places you in a higher league, you’ll automatically be promoted for the next competition period.
How are live leaderboards updated?
The leaderboards are updated regularly as new jump heights are recorded by WOO and Surfr and synced to their global, public databases. This allows competitors to track their progress and standings in (nearly) real time.
